Douglas Edgar van Veelen's - Home Design Page

Last updated 7/27/2002

Hi. Welcome to my "home" design page.

This is my recording of my weekend home design progress for my home on my Lula property.

To see the original concept, click here.

I have started construction of the first building.

These photo shows the "lumber yard" I started in my front yard on 7/27/2002 with the wood for the framing of the floor of the caboose.

This shows the 6"x6" beams have not yet been unloaded from "Mariah". (I just had to replace my 1986 Buick named "Red Arrow" for the PRR passenger trains and the pick-up ran line the wind. I took the name from the movie Paint Your Wagon. FYI "Red" had almost 250,000 miles when the engine quit.). Just over the stacks of lumber is the 7.5" gauge RR to the back yard.

Here is a shot from the back deck (about the same height as the front yard in the previous photo) showing the 7.5" gauge ballast/work car with two 4x4x12' treated timbers for the floor supports. The stakes can be seen showing about where the ends of the floor panels will be.

In the ivy, are two 4x4x8' timbers ready for use as uprights to support the 4x4x12's. Also hidden in the ivy are eight 12"x12" concrete deck footings where the uprights are to go.

Here are a few shots of progress on July 28.

This shot shows the 7.5" gauge ballast/work car with a load of lumber.

Here are the first two floor panels on top of the "foundation". The panel on the right is the original one built about a year ago. The one on the left was started today. With a temperature of about 92F and a high humidity, I've been working for about 30-45 minutes at time and then taking a break for about the same length of time.

I just had to show all my help in this project. Jenny has been coming around and keeping me company and making sure its done right.

Here is a shot from the deck showing the work. The two panels are 8' x 3.75' for a total of 7.5' in width. On the other side of the two panels (type F1), a type F2 panel will be added. It needs a 6x6x8' on the end and will probably take two people to place. The F2 panel will be 3' long and 7.5' wide.

On this end of the panels, will be four more F1 panels and then another F2 panel. This makes the overall size 30' x 7.5'.
